In Norway or elsewhere, Jenny Hval has made a name for herself both as an artist and a writer. Multidisciplinary and transgressive are regularly used to describe her work and define an artist who achieves expression through music, literature, visual art, and performance. From being a writer, who made her debut in 2009 with the novel “Perlebryggeriet” to a range of artistic collaborations and signature works in sound installations, compositions, productions, and performances, Jenny reveals herself as a unique artist.
Since her debut album in 2006, under Rockettothesky, a nickname given after recording her first song and name that would come to an end in 2010, Jenny Hval has developed a distinct approach to a more intimate sound. On To Sing You Apple Trees and Medea, the first two of her artistic life and unique as Rockettothesky, it was already a facet that was noticeable to her. Viscera (2011, Rune Grammofon), her first album under her name, indicated that we would be looking at something unique. Uncut placed it as one of the 50 best records of the year.
With Innocence Is Kinky (2013) and Apocalypse, girl (2015), Hval received the deepest international acclaim for her fascinating voice, singular delivery, and songwriting that increasingly incorporated elements of poetry, prose, writing, performance, and film.
In 2016, she releases Blood Bitch and generates strident chatter around the new work. The consensus is clear: Blood Bitch is a record of excellence. At the end of the year, the Norwegian’s album takes over the lists of best albums of 2016, where we see it in the primordial places for the music press like FACT (#1), The Line Of Best Fit (#1), The Independent (#4) and The WIRE (#6). In April of the following year, she presents it at gnration, in a concert that still lingers in everyone’s memory.
The seventh studio album came three years after Blood Bitch. The Practice of Love, inspired by the film of the same name directed by the provocative Austrian artist Valie Export, ended her time at Sacred Bones, before heading to her new home, the giant 4AD. The new record, Classic Objects is, according to Hval, her version of a pop record. What is certain is it already is one of the best records of 2022 and promises another fantastic concert from the Norwegian woman.
