New technologies and cultural developments are often synonymous with erasure; forgetting why or how we used to do some things, and what words or communities meant. Addressing moments, practices and works that have faded from memory (or have been completely forgotten) over the last three decades, alt.history conversation cycle features experts in culture and aesthetics, in a reflection that seeks to resurface and re-examine the lost narratives of digital culture. This programme is curated by Holo (holo.mg), a Canadian editorial and curatorial platform, created in 2012, which focuses on emerging trajectories in art, science and technology.

#4 — karsten schmidt

Programmer, computer engineer, designer and artist, Karsten Schmidt focuses on creating and teaching open source tools for use in computer art and design. Over the last decade, he has developed thi.ng, a collection of programming tools using languages such as C, Clojure, Forth, TypeScript and Zi. He has also developed transdisciplinary work with artists, architects, designers and brands. He recently worked at Nike as an algorithm designer, and was one of the first collaborators on the Processing.org project. His artistic work has been presented at venues such as MoMA in New York, the Barbican Centre in London, the Design Museum in Brussels, the Science Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
