‘Doomjazz’, ‘Stonerswing’, or ‘Jazz Sabbath’. For a long time now, people have been trying to come up with words and terms to describe the music of Hedvig Mollestad and her trio. Uncompromising, fascinating and visceral, the Norwegian guitarist combines influences ranging from guitar music, such as Scandinavian metal or the rock of Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix, to the jazz of John Coltrane and contemporary improvisation music. At the age of ten, Mollestad picked up her mother’s acoustic guitar for the first time and, as a teenager, discovered the world of jazz and rock through her father’s record collection. An electric guitar as a present was all she needed to confirm her future. At the Oslo Academy of Music, after being honoured with the ‘Young Jazz Talent of the Year’ award at the Moldejazz festival, she formed the Hedvig Mollestad Trio – also known as HM3 – with Ellen Brekken on bass and Ivar Loe Bjørnstad on drums. They quickly won over Norwegian audiences with explosive performances and have released six outstanding studio albums. The most recent, Ding Dong, You’re Dead (2021), is also the most dynamic and experimental, but with enough creative riffs to satisfy headbangers and jazzheads alike.
Leading with guitar in hand, Hedvig Mollestad arrives at Julho é de Jazz accompanied by Ellen and Ivar, experts at creating the perfect rhythmic base for the Norwegian to shine on the six strings. As all live performances predict, Hedvig Mollestad Trio will bring a stormy and confident concert, where heavy rock, free jazz and prog blend in the hands of three phenomenal musicians.
Julho é de Jazz takes place at Theatro Circo and gnration, and 50 general passes are available, giving access to all seven shows and the two documentaries.
