van der

In the family of those who record on the Príncipe label, there is a web of relationships that links some of the artists who have proudly added the same suffix to their names. These “foxes” are a kind of tribute to DJ Marfox, an expression of respect and admiration for the one who broke new ground and acted as a guide for the others. Finding Van Der in this family tree would hardly be a surprise, as he admits that it was DJ Marfox, his cousin, who sparked his passion for music. However, he’s not related to Príncipe, and in recent years he’s made a remarkable jump into techno, with geometric and hypnotic sets. At the same time, his love of modular electronics has led him to create music that is just as captivating. The ambitious material he has prepared for us comes from exactly this new territory — and we are convinced that his ambition will be matched by our admiration.

The tracks on You said you’d hold my hand through the fire — the album released this year, one which marks Hyperdub’s 20th anniversary — are much more than the story of a collaboration between two musicians who admire each other as artists. The work is riddled with enigmatic cracks that give us glimpses into the harsh reality of a four-year long relationship that ended, leaving behind its own crevices and a story to be told. Precisely in the midst of a romantic break-up, Iceboy Violet and Nueen have built a monument that documents the history of their union, laying bare both the good and the bad. The result is an intimate, sorrowful and exposed music album, whose sound navigates through an electronic fog of grainy hi-fi, at times testifying to the possibility of life in a post-Burial world. Performed live, expect an exorcism that propels us to a happy ending.

saya

It seems hard to believe that Saya arrived in Porto not so long ago. In just over a year, her name has become well known in the city that already feels very much her own, where she has found a stage, visibility and an audience for her work. Her practice has revealed a multi-potential artistic force, as she proudly calls herself, and as we are happy to confirm. It unfolds in a number of different activities that have proven to be vital for a city and a culture that aspire to be open, progressive and equitable. And being one of those people for whom any place is too small, no matter where they are, Saya has been touring Portugal from north to south, hosting and presenting various international radio programmes, incorporating kuduro, experimental Arabic electronics, gqom, baile funk, rave funk, hard drums, etc., into her sets that are ever more… multi-potential. Daughter of Palestinian migrants, born in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Saya is also a passionate social activist who celebrates differences in a context that brings us together through music.

ziúr

We know the history of techno in Berlin, how it arrived from Detroit at the end of the 1980s and how it put down roots to create its own genealogy. Over the decades, the city has always been synonymous with artistic freedom, and techno has been its most distinctive trademark, also thanks to the individuals who have chosen the German capital as a safe place to work. Ziúr is one of these forces that have written and rewritten some of the most recent pages of Berlin’s effervescence. Whether it’s through her recent but prolific output as a music producer on labels such as Planet Mu or Pan, as an astute and magnetic DJ, or as a master of ceremonies at major events and gatherings, Ziúr has tapped into Berlin’s vibrant techno energy and then, like a delicate artisan in an industrial environment, bent and reconfigured it, spreading her passion and creating her own unique footprint in a land full of possibilities.
