ana vieira: cadernos de montagem
A pioneer in more experimental and expanded artistic practices, Ana Vieira (1940-2016) is one of the most influential artists in 20th century Portuguese art. She was born in Coimbra and spent her childhood in São Miguel, in the Azores. In 1964, she graduated in Painting from the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, but her career took her beyond this art. With a career spanning more than four decades, she has developed a body of work marked by installations and scenic and theatrical constructions. She held two important exhibitions, in 1998 at the Serralves Museum and in 2011 at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Her work has been shown nationally and internationally since then, most notably the anthological exhibition in 2017 at the Graça Morais Art Center in Bragança and the retrospective dedicated to her in 2020 by the Es Baluard Museum in Spain.
Ana Vieira: Cadernos de montagem focuses on the work of Ana Vieira, seeking to study, document and present a set of works, along with the respective drawings and notes made by the artist. The aim of this exhibition project is to produce assembly notebooks as a way of ensuring their preservation and presentation in future exhibitions.
The exhibition and editorial project was designed by curator Antonia Gaeta, architect Astrid Suzano and conservator and researcher Sofia Gomes, in collaboration with the Banco de Arte Contemporânea (BAC) and the heirs to the artist’s estate, her children Miguel and Paula Nery.
