three expansions of cinema: future, painting and duration

What will cinema be and what will it be like in a hundred years’ time? What are we talking about when we talk about the representation of painting in the seventh art? What can duration mean in cinema? Three questions that serve as a motto for three reflections by three distinguished guests: academic, critic and film curator Yun-hua Chen; art historian Steven Jacobs, who specializes in interactions between cinema and the visual arts; and artist and researcher Fernando José Pereira. These interventions culminate in a dialogue moderated by Eduardo Brito – curator of the Cinex program.

2025 – spain, portugal – 7′ – m/16

The word “plumas” in Spanish is used offensively against the homosexual community, especially gay men. The short film PLUMASS reflects on this expression, which only Spanish speakers have, and which turns the external gaze into a reality. Based on the uncapturable aspects of being, which bother and differentiate, the director creates a documentary and experimental work in which she mixes visual arts, dance, music and performing arts. After the premiere, this work will be broadcast in the Órbita cycle.

Beta is the protagonist of the video-essay Pupa, which explores the body in Galician trans and non-binary people, trapped between diagnoses and norms that impose limits on identity. Through fantastic images that merge natural and surgical motifs, the story portrays the process of gender reaffirmation. We witness the beginning of the transformation, with the opening of a pupa (or chrysalis), from which a wingless being emerges, marked even before it is born.
