After celebrating a decade of existence, in which it also occupied the Theatro Circo, Julho é de Jazz will once again present a program that will cover the city’s two venues over the course of two weeks. The eleventh edition once again brings together a luxury cast, bringing some of the best names in modern jazz to Braga.
ricardo toscano & gabriel ferrandini
In the summer of 2020, two of the most recognized names in national jazz were challenged to spend two days in the studio. Confined in a recording session in which nothing was thought out or prepared, drummer Gabriel Ferrandini and saxophonist Ricardo Toscano had a clear objective: to record music in its rawest and most unpredictable form, in the raw state that flows from the instruments and materializes in the purest expression.
The paths of these two musicians had crossed for the first time at a concert in Coimbra ten years earlier. That first meeting, when both were nothing more than promises of what they would inevitably become, was followed by a few fortuitous concerts, either as a duo or as an ensemble – as the tradition of spontaneity in jazz and improvised music dictates. The idea for this formal union, which was both understandable and irrefutable, came from composer and producer Eduardo Queiroz, who brought them together for these recording sessions that gave rise to the album Unpredictable Sessions (2024). In addition to the album, a documentary of the same title was also produced, directed by Lucas Dutra and awarded best documentary film at the Tokyo Film Awards and the Cine Paris Film Festival.
With the free spirit of improvisation guiding them, Gabriel Ferrandini and Ricardo Toscano continue their unpredictable sessions, now performing them live. After the inaugural concert at SMUP Parede, they come together in a house that has seen them in many ways, but never in this way and with this chemistry.
