For twenty years, Lisbon’s nightlife has seen a CAVEIRA. This shapeless spectre wanders through the threshold spaces formed at the crossroads of free jazz, noise and blues. The legend of this abantesma began as a trio with Pedro Gomes and Rita Vozone on guitars and Quim Albergaria on drums. They would get together on Wednesdays to play and rehearse for free at the ‘Delfins bar’ – the Lotus Bar in Cascais. Pedro revealed all this in an interview with Rimas e Batidas, admitting that at first it was just a joke. But, as with all mythological beings, things started to get serious. By the end of the 2000s, CAVEIRA had already shared stages with the likes of Damo Suzuki, Devendra Banhart, Psychic Hills and Comets on Fire. The legend grew and spread through the shadows of Lisbon.
The days as a trio are long gone. The original CAVEIRA is still led by Pedro Gomes, always with the same motto of overwhelming sound, raw improvisation and noise. Gabriel Ferradini joined on drums and it wasn’t long before Pedro Sousa on saxophone and Miguel Abras on bass completed the quartet we know today. There was little talk of albums, with a few self-releases popping up here and there, but never an album with the sound Gomes had in mind. Until, in 2024, the time finally came to stay alive. With three long tracks, CAVEIRA’s debut album opens a new chapter in the new life of this sensory spectrum, which is preparing to invade stages beyond the capital.
