The prominence of the issue of immigration, within the context of the populist narratives that have emerged across Europe, has led to a re-evaluation of the importance of borders in political discourse, as well as to the use of hostile deterrence strategies underpinned by cutting-edge technology. One example of this is the EU-funded Talos project, which strengthens border surveillance and security across Europe through the use of semi-autonomous robots. Drawing on the experiences of choreographer, performer and researcher Arkadi Zaides – with the Talos project – and researcher, artist and curator Margarida Mendes – with her work in the Białowieża Forest, on the border between Poland and Belarus – that the reality of these liminal zones will be the subject of discussion, in a conversation moderated by curator and writer Nora O’Murchú.
