Dion McKenzie has never hidden what they stand for. Not only does their name conceal a manifesto within an acronym (Together You Gather All Power Applied Worldwide), but their previous albums also speak volumes through their titles: “Get Free” (2020) and “Love has never been a popular movement” (2023). The first album marks a kind of artistic birth and the consequent liberation and self-affirmation; the second album asserts their political stance within club culture through a quote from James Baldwin. On their third album, released this year on Tresor, TYGAPAW embodies evolution, maturity, and determination, lucidly highlighting the power of the collective as an essential force, perhaps the most deeply rooted driving force behind the Fake Accent events over the past decade in New York, where Black queer activism is celebrated through techno. From New York to Berlin, nothing has changed: devastating and urgent techno, minimalist and high-speed, with broken and daring rhythms that revolutionize the dance floor. Their albums are a monument to strength and catharsis. Tonight, live, will be even more.
