Ricardo Jacinto, Gonçalo Almeida and Nuno Morão make up this string and percussion trio which explores the intersections between the broad musical spectrum of each of its members, presenting an improvised, electroacoustic, multi-idiomatic musical dialogue strongly influenced by minimal and repetitive strategies. Formed in 2016, The Selva has released albums by Clean Feed and Shhpuma: The Selva (2017), Canícula Rosa (2019) and Barbatrama (2021), the latter in collaboration with producer Machinefabriek.
In 2018, they developed an artist residency at gnration that originated a memorable final public presentation. They now return to present their new album, Camarão-Girafa, edited in March this year by Clean Feed. In this work, the group’s music tries to remain without a defined genre, showing “compositions progressively more focused on repeated motifs and slow textural transformations, new horizons and contours”, they refer to. The electronic, a more and more assiduous presence in the group, and the amplification of the string instruments allied to an active post-production that owes a lot to sonic strategies coming from rock take Camarão-Girafa to a new level of listening to the dialogue of an uncommon formation in jazz.
Nuno Morão is a musician, composer, sound recordist and teacher. He studied composition, pipe organs, piano, drums, various percussions and a panoply of plastic instruments.
Gonçalo Almeida participates in various projects ranging from modern jazz, free jazz and jazzcore to free improvisation music. He has shared the stage with musicians such as Ab Baars, Balasz Pandi, Chris Speed, Carlos Zíngaro and Rodrigo Amado.
Ricardo Jacinto divides his work between music and art focused on the relationship between sound and space. As a cellist, he has collaborated with David Maranha, Hernâni Faustino and Manuel Mota. He is also part of the Harmonies project, together with the pianist Joana Gama and the musician Luís Fernandes.
