Five albums, hundreds of concerts and twenty years later, indignu still has its sights firmly set on the future. Born in Barcelos in 2004, they are celebrating their second anniversary this year in the best way possible: with a very special tour, accompanied by Manel Cruz (Ornatos Violeta and Pluto) and Ana Deus (Três Tristes Tigres).
The post-rock label is often used to coin indignu’s sound, alongside influences such as Godspeed You Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky or Mogwai. But the people of Barcelona have something that none of these names can have: Portuguese musicality and nostalgia. Like the winter fog that falls over the Cávado valley and covers the hills of Minho, the sound of indignu also lives off melancholic and sunkissed landscapes; it lives off calm and storm.
Composed of Afonso Dorido on guitar, Graça Carvalho on violin, Ivo Correia on drums and Pedro Sousa on bass, indignu made their debut with Fetus in Fetu (2010). But it was with the album Odyssea (2013) that the band made a name for itself on the national and international alternative scene. This was followed by Ophelia (2016) and umbra (2018), which continued to cement indgnu’s path and sound. More recently, they released Adeus (2022), under the A Thousand Arms and dunk!records labels. This fifth album is their most acclaimed work to date and features Ruca Lacerda (Mão Morta, Pluto) on the recording and mixing, and Birgir Jón Birgisson – who has worked with names such as Björk or Spiritualised – on the mastering. Now, in addition to the celebratory tour that brings them to gnration, indignu is also preparing a new EP, 3.20.0, which promises to be a prelude to what is yet to come.
