Ambassadors of the sound of São Tomé and Príncipe and of “Mama Djumba”, África Negra is a cult band with a fifty-year history. They came together in 1972, when the Portuguese colonial forces were still occupying the country. Using guitars with effects, something rare in São Toméan music at the time, they created a unique sound to which they added the local puíta, soukous and rumba. Over the years, new generations have rediscovered the music of the group led by Emídio Vaz, Leonídio Barros and “General” João Seria, who left us in 2023.
