leah singer & lee ranaldo: contre jour
A master of shadows and silhouettes, Lourdes Castro is one of the key figures in 20th century contemporary art. Over the course of 91 years, the Portuguese artist created a vast and innovative body of work, characterised by her use of translucent materials that play with the perception of shadow and light and question the essence of objects. A crucial work that has captivated and inspired several artists, including Leah Singer and Lee Ranaldo, who pay homage to Lourdes Castro in the show Contre Jour, with the presentation of All Lights are Shadows.
Adapting the French name for contralight, Contre Jour is a project that has been going on for more than thirty years, bringing together the artistic vision of Canadian photographer and multimedia artist Leah Singer with American composer, guitarist and producer Lee Ranaldo, a recognised founding member of Sonic Youth. In their projects in this field, Singer and Lee break with the traditional dynamic between performer and audience to examine how image and sound interact live.
This performance was born out of a visit to Lourdes Castro’s studio in 2011. On the horizon they foresaw a future collaboration that never came to pass. Using a diverse range of acoustic and electric guitars and digital instruments, All Lights are Shadows creates a challenging soundscape that relates to the work of Lourdes Castro. The result is an immersive sound experience where the techniques and materials that the historic artist developed are reinterpreted in a bucolic and reflective journey that reflects on her lasting impact on the international artistic avant-garde.
