Composer, instrument designer and researcher Matthias Puech premieres his latest sound performance at gnration. Créature is a multichannel electronic work created for an ensemble of autonomous sound entities that produce synthetic noises. Wandering uncontrollably at the mercy of randomness, the sounds and movements of this ensemble are synthesised and executed in real time by software written by the French artist. Abandoning the traditional intention of composition, Puech allows his digital ‘creatures’ to follow their own paths, resulting in a dynamic and unexpected performance, where these entities always seek to simulate life in all its forms.
Created throughout 2023 and 2024, Créature emerged during the development of new instruments at INA-GRM, a research group in the field of sound and electroacoustic music. An acronym for Groupe de Recherches Musicales, the GRM was created in 1951 by French composer, musicologist and sound engineer Pierre Shaeffer, recognised as the father of musique concrète and responsible for developing new musical technologies in the years following the Second World War. The GRM is currently under the remit of France’s National Audiovisual Institute, and Matthias Puech is in charge of the GRM Tools development group, a set of sound processing plugins. His modular synthesis instruments and the software he writes are used by artists all over the world and will be the focus of the masterclass Inventing Music, Composing Instruments, organised by Braga Media Arts the day after the premiere of Créature.
