The Diary of a Chambermaid (1963) marks Spanish-Mexican director Luis Buñuel’s first foray into French cinema. Based on the novel by Octave Mirbeau, the film follows Célèstine, a young woman who moves from Paris to the countryside. She joins the Monteil bourgeoisie, but doesn’t like them. Just as she’s about to say goodbye, she learns of the rape and death of a little girl. He suspects Joseph, a fascist who also works for the Monteils. He decides to stay on the job to find out if he’s guilty and get a confession out of him.

In this cineconcert, promoted by CINEX and part of Braga 25 Portuguese Capital of Culture, the young musician Francisco Carneiro is challenged to set to music this essential work by the master of cinema. Born in Braga, Francisco dedicated himself from an early age to studying different instruments – such as the piano, guitar, transverse flute, alto saxophone and drums – and to exploring different musical genres from classical to jazz, pop and electronica. He has a degree in Music, with a specialization in Violin Performance, from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, and a Master’s degree in Film Music Composition from Codarts University for the Arts in Rotterdam. Based in Zurich, where he is studying for a Master’s degree in Composition and Theory at the University of the Arts, he works as a composer, music producer and teacher. Over the last few years, Francisco has been responsible for the musical composition of the show TRUST by the dance company .com.dance e.V., in partnership with the choreographer Katja Gluding, and for the soundtrack of the series Bittersweet, a Sapphire Films production broadcast by the Dutch broadcaster Avotros.
