kara-lis coverdale
Kara-Lis Coverdale’s music seems to exist in a parallel dimension, a temporal anomaly where the futurism of electronics collides head-on with tradition and the violence of the sacred. In her world, synthesizers coexist with piano and church organs, blurring the boundaries – real and imagined – between acoustic and electronic.
Born in Ontario, she grew up surrounded by music and, at the age of fourteen, was already organist and musical director of a church in Canada. In the midst of sermons and performances, she discovered electronic music, which she began to incorporate into the more classical pieces she was writing. When she moved to Montreal’s buzzing scene, she won the admiration of Tim Hecker, who invited her to play on his albums Virgins (2013) and Love Streams (2016). Between these releases, she made her solo debut with A 480 (2014), followed by the superb Aftertouches (2015), which earned her high praise from the critics, appearing in the top charts of The Wire magazine and NPR. Described by The Guardian as one of the most interesting young composers in North America, she has won the admiration of giants such as Brian Eno, Arvo Pärt and Tyondai Braxton, with whom she has worked.
Taking advantage of his visit to Braga for an artistic residency at the Basílica dos Congregados (where he will work with the pipe organ of this emblematic venue, as part of the Pipe Poetics program of Braga 25 Portuguese Capital of Culture), Coverdale will be at gnration for a very special concert. In anticipation of a new work, due out at the end of 2025, the composer will present, for the first time live, a series of new piano compositions, written in a rural studio in Valens, Canada, and in deep communion with the night and winter.
