Object Of Projection is Kim Gordon’s first exhibition in Portugal. It serves as a retrospective of the American artist’s work over the last decade, with special emphasis on her growing series of performative video installations.

An icon that time seems unable to touch, Kim Gordon is a living legend of music and alternative culture. Almost half a century into her career, she still has the same razor-sharp voice and “effortlessly cool” aura – which is like saying, cool without trying – that she’s always had, since the days when she was breaking history with the band she formed in 1981. She is recognized for her influential work with Sonic Youth, but her practice goes far beyond music. She has worked with painting, in a critical – and almost post-Warhol – expression of the American myth. She wrote one of the most dominant literary autobiographies of the last decade, Girl in a Band (2015). With fashion designer Daisy von Furth, she created the clothing brand X-Girl. She has released albums ranging from the art punk of No Home Record (2019) to the electronica of The Collective (2024), which was recently nominated for two Grammys.

Since the late 1970s, she has also produced a series of works with a varied visual matrix, exploring themes related to architecture, the stage, the body, gesture and the deconstruction of the hierarchical sacredness of the object. Starting out by signing these works as Design Office – a project she has maintained to this day – Kim Gordon has developed a multifaceted approach, strongly based on conceptual art, installation, observation and punk aesthetics.

circuito – serviço educativo braga media arts is organising a series of free guided tours of this exhibition on feb 15 and mar 8.
