artistic residency / open call

binário – open call

call for performance proposals in the field of art and technology

5 Nov 2026

to 29 Dec 2026

Originally conceived by gnration as a programming cycle for performative projects at the intersection of art and technology, Binário now takes the form of an open call to support a new work, co-produced by gnration and Teatro das Figuras.

Until 29 December 2026, a call for proposals is open for projects exploring the intersection of sound, light, moving image, digital technologies or computational art in a performative or hybrid (performative/installation) context. Emerging artists, individually or as collectives, who have created and publicly presented between one and four artistic works may apply.

what we offer

  • €10,000 (ten thousand euros) in financial support for the execution of the entire project, plus VAT at the applicable legal rate, where relevant;
  • An artistic residency at gnration from 31 May to 8 June 2027;
  • A technical residency at Teatro das Figuras, in Faro, from 17 to 19 January 2028;
  • Public presentations at the co-producing institutions: gnration, 9 October 2027; Teatro das Figuras, 20 January 2028;
  • The co-producing institutions, gnration and Teatro das Figuras, will provide the conditions necessary for the presentation of the performances, including set-up and rehearsal periods, technical support, front-of-house management, the necessary licensing, and inclusion of the activity in their communications.

who can apply

  • Emerging professional artists and collectives, meaning those who have created and publicly presented between one and four artistic works;
  • Artists or collective entities who do not have artistic proposals of their own scheduled in the programming of gnration or Teatro das Figuras during 2027 and 2028, respectively.

how to submit a proposal

  • Each applicant may submit only one proposal. If an applicant submits more than one proposal, whether individually and/or through a collective structure, only the last one submitted will be considered.

jury

Gil Silva – Artistic Director of Teatro das Figuras
Laetitia Morais – Visual artist, researcher and speaker
Luís Fernandes – Artistic Director of gnration

Should any circumstance arise that could constitute a conflict of interest in the evaluation of a particular application, the jury member concerned must recuse themselves from reviewing that proposal and will be replaced by Joana Miranda, Coordinator of Braga Media Arts.

how will proposals be evaluated?

Proposals will be evaluated by the jury according to the following criteria and weightings:

  • Artistic relevance, considering aspects such as the originality, coherence and complexity of the proposal (50%);
  • Demonstrated capacity to carry out the project, in both artistic and budgetary terms (25%);
  • Suitability of the team’s technical and artistic skills to the nature of the proposal (25%).

Each criterion will be scored from 1 to 20. Scores will be assigned individually by each jury member.
If any questions or doubts arise during the review of applications, the jury may contact applicants by email to request any necessary clarifications.
The final evaluation of proposals, following the period of hearing of interested parties, will be the average of the scores, with the appropriate weighting applied to each criterion.
If the winning applicant decides not to accept the support, the regulations provide for the support to be awarded to the second-ranked applicant, and so on.
