What can we make of the images constantly shared on the online on social media? This practical workshop will provide participants with basic techniques to identify the source and geolocation of images published on the Internet without any element of context. These techniques, presented under the term OSINT, an acronym for Open-Source INTelligence, allow the use of publicly available data and tools to promote the understanding of an event or situation and are regular tools for journalists and researchers who use them to disprove fake news and restore counter-narratives.
This workshop will also allow an introduction to camera mapping, a technique that consists in recreating a 3D replica using a provided image. Using free and open-source tools such as fSpy and Blender, participants will deepen their knowledge by modeling a basic 3D model and calculating the time of day of an image using shadow matching. To finish, participants will learn how to export an animation which might be shared later.

Paris-based artist and filmmaker, the work of Nicolas Gourault (b. 1991) wanders between visual art and visual culture, linking these dimensions to political concerns through the documentary and critical use of new media. Through tools of image production, Gourault explores the forms of otherness that persist within controlled spaces. His works have been exhibited at venues such as the Centre Pompidou, the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien or Ars Electronica, but also at film festivals such as Cinéma du Réel, Festival dei Popoli, IndieLisboa and Curtas Vila do Conde.
