Kara Jackson is one of those names that still has a lot to tell us about. One of folk music’s most interesting new artists, the American makes her national debut with the highly praised Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love?, one of the landmark albums of 2023.
Kara Jackson has a unique ability to hold us spellbound by her words and the images she conjures up with them. Her melancholic, cavernous voice is the perfect vehicle for the work of the poet and songwriter who, in 2019, was named Youth Poet Laureate. Drawn to folk music’s long history of reclamation and political commentary, in 2019 she released the EP A Song for Every Chamber of the Heart (2019). Four years later, Kara Jackson has finally unveiled her long-awaited debut album, created in partnership with Nnamdi Ogbonnaya, Kaina and Sen Morimoto, talents from her hometown of Chicago.
Why does the Earth Gives People to Love? is everything you’d expect from a title as heartbreaking as this. An emotional and visceral work in which the artist reflects on love, mourning and loss, condensing them into an intimate and universal narrative. This album earned her a lot of press attention, appearing on the best albums of the year lists of Pitchfork, The Guardian, The New Yorker, Quietus, Público, NPR, Rolling Stone, CRACK and Bandcamp. After touring with Julia Jacklin, Angel Olsen, Corinne Bailey Rae and appearing on Kevin Abstract’s latest album, Kara Jackson is coming to Portugal for the first time, in a unique opportunity to see the future of folk before she certainly heads for bigger stages.
