tempo e tempo, by luiz zanotello
in collaboration with ricardo vieira
Scattered around the internet are hundreds of open-access cameras that observe the transformation of skies, seas, forests, deserts, glaciers and rivers. These are devices designed to study and monitor climate and weather changes, biodiversity, pollution and much more. In Tempo e Tempo, an algorithm designed by Luiz Zanotello compiles and choreographs the transmission flow of these devices that move, look and speculate about the imminent change to a dreamlike time – a time in which past, present and future meet.
Following the thread left open by Michael Snow’s documentary film La Région Centrale (1971), this multi-channel installation by Luiz Zanotello emancipates itself from the notion of the centre and re-appropriates the idea of the periphery from an anti-colonial point of view. This work, created during an artist residency at gnration under the EMAP – European Media Art Platform programme, calls for the rescue of indigenous worldviews and asks how these perspectives survive in the world of technocultures, climate crisis and digital surveillance on a global scale.
Born in Brazil and living in Berlin, Luiz Zanotello is an artist and researcher whose practice is based on poetic research into ecology and techno-imagination. His work unfolds in installations and performative gestures that investigate the paradoxical nature of language, matter and time. By re-appropriating methods from the intersections between art, science and technology, Zanotello explores new perceptions of the present time and its criticisms.
circuito – serviço educativo braga media arts is organising a series of free guided tours of this installation on 26 oct, 23 nov and 7 dec.
